MP3 CD player for car?
#1
Is there a unit I can use in the car to allow me to insert a disc with MP3's on it and then play them?
I don't want to invest in a EMPEG type device, just want the CD player to handle CD-R's and if possible CD-RW's....

I seem to recall that Pine were releasing a portable unit that could read CDs with MP3 files on and play them back. You could always hook that into your stereo. Failing that, I think there were rumours of the company making an in-dash version...

Hello,
A CD-R or CD-RW is the same as any other CD, be it Audio or Data. In fact if you get a playstation game and put it in your CD player most will play the audio from the game.
What you need is the software that lets you write an audio CD form MP3's rather than just "Saving/copying" the MP'3 onto the CD-R.
Have a look roud the net and you will find loads (I cant recomend any coz I dont do it). The end quality will depend on your sound card.
Bye,
Dave

As GranTurismo said, you'll need some software to do this.
Now I'm a macintosh person, so the PC side of things may be different. But from what I recall you need to convert the MP3's to AIFF files and then use some software to burn these audio files onto CD, much the same way you'd build your own compilation CD from existing CD's
If you are on Macintosh then use the SoundJam software to convert the MP3's then use Asarte's Toast (which usually ships with Mac CD writers) to burn the AIFF's onto the cd.
hope this makes sense, and helps.

I can get the MP3's onto the CD's no problem...the problem is sticking the MP3 CD into a unit which can decode it!
Sticking 150 songs on one CD sure beats having a glovebox full of CD jewelcases! And cheaper if it get's nicked.
Gran-Tourismo : Decoding the MP3's into audio format and then placing them on a CD rather defeats the object as well as loose quality!

I thought my first posting was quite clear! Obviously not!
I have a CD-R disc with 150 MP3's on it I have encoded from my private Audio CD music collection.
Since MP3 is a lossy compression technique, why would I want to expand the data again into CD Audio Format to play in my car...then i'd be back to square one and also have less quality than I first had! The software you point to just lets you get pirated MP3's from the net and stick them onto a Audio CD which I don't want to do!
I want to play the CD-R disc with my MP3's on it in a unit without using a PC based solution i.e. is there a unit that can decode the MP3 on the fly like a PC can but that fits in a standard dash slot?
phew!

And finally, you could try the various sites on the MP3Car webring, which has about 80 sites with stuff on how to get an MP3 player into your car. Most take the approach of building a PC into the car...
