Speaker recommendation pls..
#1
Guys,
I didn't ask for a 6x9 recommendation, so my system now sounds cack. Can someone pls recommend a not-so-pricey sub (10-12"), x-over and amp (for sub only I expect). I will build the bass-box myself due to weird mounting requirements!
Has anyone (except Jay!) reinforced their rear seat for a sub/amp combo?
Ta, pilch

Depends what you mean by reinforce??!!
I have a carpeted piece of wood, over the the back of the rear seat, so no I can't use the fold down seats! (No more skiing for me!!)
Amps and capacitor are mounted to it.
I would look at the Alpine ZX range of subs if I were you! I know a few people here, including myself have these.
They are cheap-ish and work very well in small sealed boxes. I think the box I have is about 0.4 cubic foot.
A reasonable named amp will have built in crossovers. Also I think you have picked the right time of year for amp buying! The new models are coming out, or due out, so last years models will be a lot cheaper! I use Alpine, and have done so for many years, so I'd say buy Alpine amps, but find a decent stereo shop and have a listen to a few of them!

Use Alpine if you want, I wouldn't.
Alpine subs sounded impressive when I heard them in various peoples cars. Unfortunately many people bought them cos max power said they were great.
Try to listen first.
A great cheap sub is made by a company called Polk, the DB10 I believe, failing that, JBL GT10s are reasonable and hard hitting. The new JL 10W3 is a budget sub but performance is supposed to be rather good (haven't heard myself). If you can indicate the type of music andthe style of bass you like, that would be a great help although the limiting factor is going to be your design of sub box.
Amp wise, please buy an amp that is tri modable in that it can run a sub and front speakers as well. Failing that a four channel amp. Amping your front speakers will be your next step so you may as well be prepared. It will save money in the long term.
Make wise I would avoid the companies who don't specialise in amps such as kenwood pioneer, alpine (and sony gulp - uuuurrrgrgghh).
Orion and phoenix giold do cheaper ranges that will massacre the above in performance for the same money.
Other options include caliber. I was surprised by the phenominal performance of there amps, but that was some time ago. Unless they have changed their whole design philosophy, I can't imagine they will be any worse now.
Good luck.
If you have any probs or questions just ask.

Sorry I forgot Adam is not too keen on Alpine!!
Anyway Adam, it was just my opinion, but I guess a lot of the time it really boils down to availability and cost!!
I guess the question really is, how much are you looking to spend pilch???

Sub Worx to a custom fit Bass Box for the Scooby. Lee Christie has one fitted. Shaped specially for the Scooby. Interested if anyone has any thoughts on this as I'm in the same position as pilch. New car has no sounds and needs it. The Sub Worx might stop the bass box flying across the boot.

Phoenix gold and rockford fosgate have always provided me with as much OOMPH as i could handle.
both quality amps, and even though a bit more than kenwood etc, they are soooo much better.

I'm building a box for 2 JL 10W6s running off a Rockford Fosgate Punch 200ix. The box design fills in the bit of the boot between the back seats and the edge that's just behind the speakers/light. Hopefully should be quite neat when it's finished.

Have a 12" Polk fitted in a box, various Rockford Fosgate amps, and loads of BIG speaker wire just sitting in my garage gathering dust I don't think I can be bothered to install it. Might be interested in selling any of it if anyone really wants it. Ít's about 3 years old now.
