are these hard drive car stereos a gimmic?

size, size is what you are getting.....
CD holds roughly 640mb, hard drive units anything - 10GB, 20GB, or more so.
Also, some of the HDD units can be used in the house, so you have a cheap "soundserver" with all your music instantly playable, CD's can be packed away safely.

1700+ tracks in my car at the moment with about 30% free space. No bag of cd's or a discchanger in the boot that you never change
At the quality I rip my mp3's at I would only get about 80-90 tracks on a CD so its quite a big difference.
Oh, aye, and having bouncing scrolling text with snow on the display is just fun

Willie - you're on the list!
For everyone else out there, we're running a beta trial with about 20 units in 2-3 weeks time and there will be a £50 discount for beta testers. It's really to help us iron out any s/w niggles, etc. We'll set up a feedback mechanism for beta and s/w updates.
We have around 10 potential beta users right now. If you're interested in being part of this, please email me at lee.harris@h2distribution.com.
Cheers
Lee.

Most CD > MP3 conversion programs (the process is known as "ripping") will automatically populate the ID3 data (artist/album/trackname/genre) from internet-based CD title databases.
Check out MusicMatch and CDeX for starters.
