Door spkrs MY02 - Have they changed size?
#1
Guys
I have finally taken off the door trim on my MY02 WRX to look at potential speaker upgrades for fit etc.
They speaker in place was a 30W cone unit which has the usual "triangle" shape, but was a solid metal piece (brass coloured).
I also measured the holes etc. and found that:
aperture width = 13cm
min depth = 4cm (there are a few more mm to be gained to where the speaker fits onto the proudest face of the doorskin)
Speker width = 5.5" (14.9cm)
Speaker mounting depth = 3.8mm
This came as a surprise as you boys seem to always talk about the 6"/6.5" models as replacements. SO, is my car different?
BTW, the Infinity site recommend their 505cs/50.5cs not the 6 series.
Has anybody got the tweeter bracket to fit a replacement tweeter, such as the Infinity's? (Again, my bracket looks a little different to the one on Chiark's website)
Sorry for the detailed message and lack of piccys to help (no dig cam yet)
Comments please
Nigel

Nigel,
I found the same problem, but instead of fitting 605Cs i ended up fitting the 16cm Infinity's, the ones with the tweeter fitted inside the cone.
Still had to make a MDF collar though [Me and woodwork does not go!]
I'm not really happy with the set up at the moment, so i'm likely to change the setup in the next 2 months.

The Infinity 605 component set definately fit, I have them in my MY02. You need a 12mm (MDF) spacer to get them to fit, cut in the shape of the orig speaker. The Infinity speaker them is attached to the spacer and spacer to the door using the orig mounting points.
I removed the orig tweater from the bracket (hard as it had thread lock on) and then used velcro to attach the Infinity tweater to the orig bracket.
Hope this helps

Thx for the replies
STi Man - What are you planning to change to then?
Both - i looked at the door trim speaker grill and the curve suggests it is tight at the top. Did the MDF spacer fit OK at the top?
