Question

Just wondered as followign a 30 min session of listening 2 radio @ lunch break me scooby woodn't start sum 4 hours later
I have 2 amps, 1 for front speakers & 1 for subs, but i turn the subs right down thru the headunit & volume damn low n all so i woodn't of fort this wood particularly purge da power?
Yes the battery is probably none too healthy but i wondered if getting a new un wood mean i was particularly less likely 2 get a flat from a mere 1/2 hour of toons?
Or alternatively any other possibilities other than running another battery or as me m8 has dun a capacitor ?

Turn off the amps

Capacitor will do nothing for you, as it's a temporary store powered by your battery...

If you're going to be doing this often, you need to install another battery and a split-charge relay. Maplins sell an Autoleads 180A relay for just this job, which'll rush you 15 quid or so...

Dealers reckon 2-3 years is about the life of a standard battery.

Mine's standard, and is 3 years old, has had "some punishment" and still seems OK. Probably about time to upgrade...

why dont you just upgrade your battery to an optima. I used to have this problem but with the optima battery im fine. I got 2 amps and 2 subs and they used to run ok.

What about a power cap? Never used one as the optima was ok but i bought one and was going to install and now i have just stripped out my system so its pointless putting it in! lol

Which optima did u go for?

Incidentally, a cap won't help, as it'll just flatten your battery ever so slightly faster

unfortunately scoobies are well known for being very poor ice cars, the alternator is too small to effectively run a split charge and to power several batteries.

ROTFLMAO... The alternator is good enough, uprate it if you need more. If you're going for out'n'out SPL then you could pick a better starting point, such as a diesel escort van, but my opinion is that there's nothing wrong with the scoob as a starting point. I know people (ok, person) who has won competitions in SQ with the scoob...

chiark the problem with uprating the alternator is the space available for it is very limited in the subaru engine bay, therefore a problem.

ALso scoobys have so much electronic interference that its been necessary for clifford to design a whole range of wrx alarms with higher resistance so they dont get ****ed up by the problems.

Add to this the fact that the loom wire on them is so flimsy in places that higher current from a powerful battery has been known to melt it.

Oh and fitting a split charge system with optimas is no good if u dont have the alternator to charge them both.

I used to be seriously into spl so know how much trouble this car is compared to previous ones i used to compete with. Its more than possible to use but requires a lot more work than other vehicles. That is unless you intend on installing a halfords basstube, in which case you wont ever have a problem. Try running a rack of amps, several subs, powercaps, screens, eqs like ice cars do and then tell me there are no problems with the scooby and ill concede the point.

Also to add to my opinion my friend imports subarus and also owns a ice shop and he has had nothing but problems with them too. Sorry, but this is my opinion from experience and other qualified peoples views which i was trying to post to help members of this community.

sorry si, see what you mean. It was the "poor ice car" that I was laughing about... as in the Rally of Sweden, which is on ice. My background's set to a picture of that.

siwrx, i understand what you are saying. If you are going for a big ice system than an alternator has to be changed. When me and a mate went for 8 subs in his van with tvs and e1s etc we had to sort out the alternator. It definitely has to be done if you are going for big systems!

However, scooby_si shouldnt need to upgrade the alternator though. I had 4 subs with 4 amps and never needed to upgrade the alternator, just needed a better battery and th eoptima worked fine. I was thinking about having another battery in the boot but never got round to it and ended up stripping my sounds system to sell my car. Maybe in the next system i might

Edited cause i couldnt remember the guys name who originally posted this topic! lol

he should be fine unless he wants to start running stupidly powerful amps, caps and loads of screens. An optima should sort most problems though he may still get dimming headlights on blines etc.

Im gonna strip mine down and insulate the loom while im soundproofing to see what sort of an ice vehicle can be put together. My m8s shop are gonna help me do it so hopefully it should be pretty mental when done.

probably gonna use dynamat extreme type stuff coz its lighter, reckon ill do the insides of the doors and the boot definatley coz theyre bad 4 vibration, will have to see how solid the rest of the car is.

used to have a pug 306 and had 3 layers over every bit of metal i could get at. Though it was soooo heavy it killed performance

Si, have you looked at the noisekiller stuff? I've tried dynamat, dynamat super, scosche accumat and this barrier stuff from noisekiller, and the noisekiller seems to perform just as well, is foil backed and seems to have a lot better adhesive than dynamat...

Keep us informed of your progress!

*grin* I'm just working out how to best fit a single RF Power 15, and wondering if I really should leave in the JL 10W6s too... Don't normally like the sound of 2 different sub systems, but with the audiocontrol 4XS and suitable amp channels I could make something a bit different. It's a lot of messing around for something that might not work tho...
