Hit nail on head - if they won't fit (some do, some don't), raise the parcel shelf up my making an MDF collar for 'em...

When Ian Bannings put some Alpine 6x9s (DDDrive) in my P1, they created an MDF collar and attached them to the underside of the metal shelf - meant no cutting of metal and no need to modify the parcel shelf... sounded awesome.

Mine were installed by cutting mainly due to the fact that I need as much boot space as possible.

Cutting or mounting under the parcel shelf is the only way to install these speakers in a stealthy way. Which does have the advantage of hiding them away from prying eyes.

If you using a sub, it's better if you space speakers back with tubeing and longer screws, you will get a lot more bass from sub.

Sometimes though, like myself, you can't afford to lose the space in the boot a sub would take up. At that point 6x9s are the best alternative.
