When Ian Bannings put some Alpine 6x9s (DDDrive) in my P1, they created an MDF collar and attached them to the underside of the metal shelf - meant no cutting of metal and no need to modify the parcel shelf... sounded awesome.

Mine were installed by cutting mainly due to the fact that I need as much boot space as possible.
Cutting or mounting under the parcel shelf is the only way to install these speakers in a stealthy way. Which does have the advantage of hiding them away from prying eyes.

Sometimes though, like myself, you can't afford to lose the space in the boot a sub would take up. At that point 6x9s are the best alternative.
