12v Switchable Supply - where to get it from?

I've added my MP3 player to me boot install, but it needs a switchable 12V supply (I guess so that it only comes on with the ignition and doesn't flatten my battery).
Do I need to splice into existing cable to get this? I've already run a remove switch on for my amp from the headunit; is this the same thing and if so, can I use that by connecting it to a small distribution block?

Your headunit should have a switched supply to the amp to turn it off when the power is switched off, i'd wire it into that personally.

On my Alpine headunit (1505R) it's a blue/white wire marked remote turn-on and gets wired straight to the remote turn-on on the Alpine Amp.
So, that must be a switchable 12v supply? Is it good practive to use one of those plastic distribution blocks (the ones found in ceiling lights) to connect them?
Sorry if I'm being a bit of a Jade, but I don't want to just bodge this.
Cheers,
Stefan

Ozzy,
Yep thats the one, what I used to do was either use a nylon ditribution block and run a long length of cable into the boot and split it to the amps etc (depending on how many you got) or solder the wire to the original and cover in heatshrink (neater) but its basically the same effect.
Either way would be fine, just depends how neat u want it, but having said that you are not going to see the dist block anyway as it will be behind the Alpine.

Thanks m8.
I'll use a distribution block to test it all works, then splice them properly once I've got my MDF boxes built for all the equipment.

Hang on - is this the master power source for the MP3 unit, or just the turn on? If it's the power, then DO NOT use the remote turn on from your amp. If it's just a turn on signal, use it and you should be OK.
I take it the unit has a constant +12 as well as this?
Nick.

Good point Chiark,
If its the master 12+ perm I would then use the dist block from the amps.
If its the 12+ switched the original statement would be fine

Hi guys,
There's two 12v supplies required for the Dension MP3 player. One is constant (taken from the battery via a distribution block already), the other is switched.
It's the later one I need. This is the one that just turns the unit on/off with the ignition.

Stefan,
Yeah I'd use the one from the head unit then, only because its there already and you are only 'tripping' a switch with it to run the current thru

you want to use the remote antenna feed from the back of your set, should be a blue wire on most alpines and pioneers. if not, a simple switch will suffice. No serious current required so a small bit of wire is fine (for switched one). Use the 12 volt fused feed from one of the bullet connectors on the back of the head unit for live, earth to chassis in the boot
