Question

I'm getting some Alpine SPRs 6"1/4 (last years equiv to the current Type-R) component speakers fitted next week, along with a V12 5 way amp (4x 55w rms + 1x 120w(ish) rms).. its all being wired in by Bannings in Guildford... but I was going to try out a couple of small subs to see which works best in the '02 wagon. I'm not a bass head, but I do like a bit more depth than component speakers alone can give...

I was thinging about a single 10" Type R (it can be wired in as 2ohm - which makes it easier to drive (doesn't it!?)).. And maybe look at the kickers units..

I know the amp isn't kicking out very much on the 5th channel, so was gonna keep the to the idea of smaller subs..

- would it be possible to drive 2x 8" (or 10") if they were daisy chained off the amp?

- what other makes do you guys recommend?

The front/rear channels on the amp will be driving the tweeters / mids respectively, as I'm disconnecting the rear door speakers completely... Anyone else done this??

Cheers, Alex

Cool

Alex

Met up with a mate last night & he tried my 12" JL sub in his motor (Evo6). He was using an Alpine amp as well (last years model, but not sure what model it is). Sounds very good mate. Even he is considering changing over to JL. BTW he was currently using Kicker subs. But they sounded good!!!

why does 2ohm make it easier to drive?? Your amp has to be 2ohm stable... and remember the load changes when bridging.... so if you are bridging the amp to drive it at 2ohm... check the amp is stable at 2ohms when bridged... (it will also get hot!)

As for subs... depends on budget I suppose, what music you like and what you want to run it with... for Me I would go for rockford fosgate power series... but JL Audio subs are nice...

Alex,

I run an MB Quart 12" (QM 300.98) that comes in a sealed carpeted box. I have it running off of the 5th channel of a Precision Power amp at 120rms.

I'd definately give it a try, it is a very nice sounding sub. It'll punch quite well if that's what you want but it's overall bass control is very very good. It may not go as low as some and it probably wont make your roof flex but if you want warmth to complement the components try it out.

DrEvil,

Try nipping down to 001 Mobile Sounds in Salfords, they let me try out about 5-6 different types of sub when I bought my JL W3 12" from them a couple of months ago, they are good lads in there, plus not too far from you.

Where are you going to mount the sub?

Raised his question with my local hi-fi shop and he pointed me to a firm who do contoured sub boxes to suit Impreza Wagons and others - so they fit nicely. There is however some restriction on the size of the sub you can fit. Will provide contact if you are interested.

JL Subs are very nice, and I have a 12W6 for sale in an also very nice sealed wedge shaped box.

Also, the lower two ohm load is actually harder to drive but will draw more power from the amp (assuming it can cope, and as has been said this is only if the amp is actually 2 ohm stable - otherwise, you risk letting the magic smoke out.....)

Hi,
like you I am not a bass head but love a tight punchy bass. Contrary to all suggestions I changed from 1 10" to two 8" RF subs(such a small cabinet its unbelievable)and this absolutely rocks.
I am driving them with a Zapco 204 amp, and I am 'driving with the king'-to quote Claptons cd with BB King-

I am thinking of selling my 2 x JL10" W3 in a sealed box which are wired in series meaning one input at 2 ohms

If you are interested or want to try them out then drop me a mail

if you run two 8's daisy chained together (in series) off a bridged amp it will run at two ohms which will pull more from the amp than runing two 8's in steroe (4 ohms). some amps will run down to 1 ohm - if yours will do this and you intend to use two 8' subs wire them bridged and in paralell (1 ohm). I have this set up with two Rockford Pro series 8' and a Phoenix Gold amp and I get more bass than i did when each driver was running off its own bridged kenwood amp. This in in a POR set up so is NOT just good for more volume but quality is much improved
