I've just bought the 6021G (Kenwood) for 199.99 from Car Electronics in Nottingham (where I live).

Seems fine at the mo. Bit of a downgrade from my old 8080R but I don't run amps and sub anymore and I wanted MP3.

If you are at the Dono trackday, give me a shout and you can have a listen

There's a place in London do it for 189.99. I (unfortunately) had to buy a copy of R*vs and M*x P**er for the adverts! R*vs has got a feature on MP3 units this month.

Question

I have a budget of up to £250, which is the best MP3 player that takes discs as opposed to Hard Drive.

I am aware that Kenwood, Sony, Pioneer etc all have models that can be picked up in this price range.

Recommendations appreciated - as well as suitably discounted retailers.

Thanks,

I have - and like lots - the Blaupunkt Los Angeles MP72. Bluespot (www.bluespot.co.uk) charge £250 for them. Nicer to use than anyone else, IMHO and sounds top too.

I know I've said it in previous posts, so sorry if I'm boring people

Kenwood 6090r here as well. Wanted the Clarion unit as it looks and sounds pukka but at £219.99 all in for the 6090r it was too good a price to pass up. Takes its time reading in mp3's esp on CD-RW but I guess thats true of most lower range headunits.

Ditto P1F and others - and yes, a tad slow on initial disk reading.

I think I'll be getting the Alpine 7894, it's £374 here but if you but it from America you can get it as cheap as £210, not sure what the shipping cost are.

The Alpine unit in American spec won't have RDS and you may not be able to pick up all the radio stations you want.

Hi All,

Thanks for the feedback.

How does the Alpine 7893 rate against the Kenwood 6021/6521 ?

Can't seem to find the Kenwood 6090R on the web - is it discontinued ?

Yep, 6090 is discontinued now, but I think you can still pick it up at the odd place, unfortunately for no discount

My brother has a std Alpine desk - midrange system and its pretty good for sound - if thats what you want. It looks basic but depends if you want arty farty graphics or not #. Believe the 7893 is 4x60 unit. only diff between this and 7894 is silver fascia and remote control. Spoke to Alpine at some length and they are having trouble fulfilling orders for 7893 at a price of 350. You can pick it up cheap as 242.50 from MCS-direct.co.uk. Got the Broadband, got CDs, got CD writer ! what more can I say ...

Im sure when I looked at bringing a Clarion unit back from the US it had no rds and was diff power rating. Was a lot cheaper though it must be said.

Interesting I'll have to check that out. Not sure why it would be a different power rating, anyone else know more about this.
