A good (and the normal) place to start would be gauges to monitor boost, oil temperature and oil pressure.
The boost is handy to know what pressure the turbo is making, can indicate issues as well as being essential when tuning the car further.
Oil temp. is handy to show you when the car is safe to boost hard and when its over heating on a hot day in traffic or at a track, say.
Oil pressure is useful to highlight when you have a problem with, well, er, oil pressure, too low and causes major problems and if it shoots up high suddenly it can be an indicator of big end failure.
If you have a phase2 classic 99->2000 then the popular thing to do is buy a three gauge cubby pod, sits on the dash in place of the central cubby, or for other years you get an A pillar pod which runs up the pillar between the drivers side front door and the windscreen.
The gauges should come with all senders which need to be plugged onto the engine to read the information.
Boost can be plumbed off the inlet manifold (there are always spare barbs blanked off).
Oil temp generally gets fitted to the block just by number three cylinder, there is a blank on the block that can be removed with a hex wrench easily enough.
oil pressure is a little more difficult, you will hopefull get a pressure sender with the gauge and this needs to ideally replace the standard one already on the car, this standard one is pants really as it wont flash a warning til something ludicrous like 0.5bar!
The standard pressure sender is on top of the block just tight by the alternator, between the alternator and the power steering reservoir, you need to uncrew the OE sender and put the new one directly in its place, they can be quite fiddly if the new sender is longer than the old, so you may need to think about which way round you have it resting.
Gauges can be good fun and cool to look at, they can also drive you to distraction worrying about every single change that isnt "normal", gauges can make you very paranoid.
if your new to all this then you might want to also consider a knocklink and a lambdalink, both available from Bob Rawle at BRdevelopments.
