Just wondering if anybody is running Tesco 99 over 400bhp?

Had my car mapped today, and filled up with Tesco instead of v power, however the car kept retarding ignition timing.

Has anybody had similar, and did switching to v power cure it?

was it mapped on tesco? or do you mean it was pulling timing during mapping?

It was pulling timing during the map, mapper said its most likely to octane rating of the petrol, asked me what I put in.

Just made me suspicious as to what Tesco actually sell as 99, if other members had issues it would be a petrol to avoid.

can get dodgy batches, also some cars just take more timing than others, alot of other factors can affect how much timing the car will take before risking detting. what was the final spec/power out put? or has it not been on a rr?

409 bhp/412 lbft on 2.0 widetrack sti, billet 321t and supporting mods, was hoping for above 420, but on a Prodrive sports cat and think that maybe holding the power back aswell. These figures are according to Ecutek road dyno.

Mines is ran on v power or tesco 99, it was mapped previously on tesco 99 which was fine

exactly the same as mine the mate, i presume standard ecu as well?

will be hitting max boost it can be safely set at and top mount will be struggling.

Yes standard ecu (Ecutek map), I read about a Grimspeed top mount on here, cant find the thread now, but has anybody done back to back testing between this and the Sti tmic?

i wouldnt bother either way mate, ecu is prob more likley the issue.

As others said, some engines can take more timing than others.

I find Tesco 99 to be as good as V-power if not better.

Certainly after reading that some Shell stations (since they are privately owned) use normal unleaded in the V-power pumps I trust Tesco 99 more.

There are cars mapped on the standard ECU for more than 450, Tidgy why are you saying the ECU is the issue?

Im running 1.7 bar boost, do the widetracks have a different ecu? Standard map sensor aswell.

My car is only standard power but vpower nitro makes my car boggy and hesitant but momentum 99 and even 85 is smoother and better mpg??? So I now stick with momentum 99

It must be something other than the fuel then, could the spark plug gap have anything to do with it?

I was trying to figure out a camshaft position sensor problem I had, (subaru supplied a faulty new sensor), and I set the gap to 0.65, is this too small?

I'm good mates with a tanker driver. Tesco 99 octane comes out of the SAME TANK as V-Power. It comes from Seal Sands refinery to us here.

My mate works for Dentressangles, who have the contract for Tesco.

Whoever told you that may be trying to make some money by selling you a new ECU you don't really need.

Every time the "99 vs VPower" debate ever comes up on ANY forum, you can guarantee that at least one poster "knows a guy who drives the tanker" and says they come from the same place

Don't get me wrong, I believe you - and I use Tesco99 religiously but it's uncanny how often that line comes out

Come out it may, but Graham told me at New year over a few drinks, as he knows the Scoob needs 99 octane.

The bl00dy stuff is so hard to come by near here that is I had my time over again. mine would be mapped with 95 octane.

I gained 45hp when I changed from my old AVO TMIC to the Grimmspeed TMIC.
I have a water/meth injection system which complicates things a bit as I'd increased flow slightly but the result has to be mainly attributed to the intercooler, it makes a lot better job of cooling ACT and boost is rock solid at 1.55bar. AVO 421hp, Grimmespeed 466.6hp and another 50lbs torque.
The AVO was a good intercooler but unable to rate it against the STI tmic.

Wow!! that is a massive difference, can I ask where you purchased it from, as there dont seem to be any seller's in the UK.

Just thinking out loud here, unless Im mistaken (and I could be) the car will retard timing due to knock, could it be a faulty knock sensor?

I'm still on a prodrive sports cat, and think this could be limiting the power, but not sure if it would cause knock?

The only other thing is I could have set the plug gap too small (0.65mm, set new ones to 0.7mm), so a new set of plugs will be going in asap.

The car has an Ecutek map, I know the ecu will be locked, but can open source software see the ignition timing?

I would like to try and view the timing, and compare between Tesco 99 and v power.

I purchased the Grimmspeed from the States via ebay, there were 2 available but that has now ended. I understood Enginetuner were looking into sourcing them at the end of last year, so they might be worth a call. Grimmspeed have a US website so you could Google it.
I paid £575 which covered all shipping and in-port costs, I thought that was a good price, it may come out more direct from Grimmspeed.
The other questions are really best answered by your mapper.
