The 7 digit "applied model" code found on the vehicle identification plate inside the engine bay is decoded in the following way.

Series code G=Impreza S=Forester B=Legacy etc.
Body type F=Wagon C=Sedan
Engine type 8=2.0L Turbo
Year code A=MY93 B=MY94 C=MY95&96 D=MY97 (facelift) E=MY98 F=MY99 G=MY00
Number of doors 2=2 door coupe 4=4 door saloon 5=5 door wagon/hatch
Model type 8=WRX 7=RA type E=Sti D=Sti Type R & RA
Transmission D=5 Speed Manual AWD P=4 Speed Automatic AWD

Thats the list from the SIDC FAQ.

Question

same here !

it ends E8KD .. which means MY98 (Eh ! see later), 2.0l k= ?? 5 speed

My car has 3 lined front bumper, so I though it was an MY97 as it was registered in 97. but according to this it's an MY98 !
I though all of the MY98's were the newer dash (with silly glove box in the middle) type cars ??
Or is this Subaru's funny way of numbering things!?!?

(I'd looked this all up b4, but some how I totally missed it!! DOH)

Are these UK turbo's? If so none of the other model types would apply and maybe the K is for UK? Just a wild guess.
