Have just taken old plugs out to replace for 1st time (MY99) - it appears thread loc had been used. Can anyone tell me whtether this is necessary & what they should be torqued to??

Threadloc should not be used.

The plugs are inserted until finger tight and then tightened by rotating a further 1/2 to 2/3 of a turn.

Yeah, don't use threadlock (or similar) on the plugs, they do not need it.

You should tighten them up so they just start to go tight and then just give them a nip up to crush the sealing washer and that's all. No need to welly on them and risk stripping the threads.

Maybe what looked like threadlock was actually copperease?
