Default Oil in intercooler/metallic rattling

Right gents, my 07 Wrx has developed a really unhealthy sounding metallic rattling noise from the engine bay. I've had a look at the exhaust and the heat shields seem secure enough and we've had the intercooler off and there is a bit of oil in there (but I have no idea how much is normal).

To give a bit more detail on the noise, the idle sounds a bit rougher and if you build the revs gently it has a similar roughness. How ever give it a good blip of the throttle (over 2500-3000rpm) and it sounds really unhealthy and seems to pop more often.

So does anyone have any idea what my problem maybe?
