Turbo. Boost problem and rattle noise
Today a problem as occurred and before i was just haveing a little blast down the a1 running on and off boost in catching up with traffic. While watching the boost gauge moving from on boost to off boost then quickly back on boost there was a sign of little hold back or the feel of turbo lag, so kept doing that thinking something aint write and could feel it and abit.
So while messing about with it on a1 i think i felt a little jolt or something but may be did'nt. so now when its idleing or letting off on the throttle their is a rattle sound from the turbo and the sound seems to travel down the exhaust.
Car still runs well and can boost up to 17-18psi but on some occassion now it will wind up to 24-26psi without no safty cutting in to pull it down(is it called boost cut). By god i know and feel when that 24 psi comes in, i would of expected something to of gone with a bang.
Also first boost seems fine then change gear, boost up again and seems fine but showed me 1 shot of high boost (24psi). But when coming on and off boost with keeping it in the same gear it always holds back on boost now.

Its a my03 wrx with td04, full decat and theres no heat sheild on it. Found out on here that i have one of them fake dv and been running for 3 years with no trouble. But i thought it sounded like the exhaust was blowing when i pulled up. I hope its not the uppipe as its not been a year and probably only done 4000 miles since fitted as it only does a few miles at weekends

[QUOTE=JohnD;11360869]Check the actuator rod to the wastegate, if you can move it the actuator is not holding the wastegate closed properly. If it's leaking exhaust you may hear a 'tinny' sound in the downpipe.
JohnD[/QUOTE
Thats what im thinking. I did touch the rod but will try again as it does sound tinny the sound its makeing. I took it for a good blast today and got back the sound had gone. So left it idleing for 10 mins and the sound slowly came back

Right. Had a look and its not making the sound now but when i put pressure on the rod to open the waste gate thats when you here that tinny sound even when i rev it.
So it looks like the wastegate is getting weak now. So when its holding back from me blibbing the throttle, on - off boost ,opening and closeing the wastegate. Its not keeping it shut

mike - could be the wastegate arm that twists with the rod is sticking in the exhaust housing - jamming shut and over boosting on occasions and not entirely closing on others.
Boost cut is set at just over 1.5 bar on yours so if it was seeing a genuine 1.5 bar for a period of time it will cut it - it is not an instant thing though.
ps - Time for an upgrade

Ok. Is that what can happen. I was hopeing it would be the case of the actuator would be getting weak and just replace that. But i would'nt know myself as im just the driver lol

As what dynamix says. I also pushed hard on the rod to open and close the wastegate myself and it made the same noise also even when giving it little revs, as when im driving it, so i know thats the cause

I Won't bother messing with that. Ive worked the rod a few times by opening and closing the wastegate and seems to of done the job. There is a slight hold back when letting the boost drop and catching it back up above 10psi, below that its instant pick up
