Time to change cambelt/seals?
This may sound like a daft question coming from me, but.........I rebuilt a hatch STI engine for a Customer, their gargae fitted it and there was a leak from a cam seal (new). a bit of a pain as they are a distance from me.
I agreed it was my liability and agreed to cover the cost. I would say no more than 3/4 hours. They tried to say i'd fitted a used/damaged crank which they obviously damaged removing the crank seal which they rekon was also leakin. They now want 7.5hrs labour, suprise suprise!

The Customer has had to pay to get his car back, total was £1100 for seals, cam belt and a new avcs pulley. The garage has him at ransom and just blames me for poor workmanship. I think I may have to review my warranty terms?

If you can afford to swallow it, then have a chat with the customer. Let him know in no uncertain terms that it's not your doing and that garage are at fault, and you're paying for it as a good will gesture as it's not his fault. Any decent customer would appreciate that, and you'll probably earn it back from him in the future.
