Default Version 3 STI ECU and de-cat

I've been told that running a decat downpipe on my standard 1997 v3 STI Type R will be fine despite not having had a remap.

Is this true? Always thought any engine related mod needed a remap, but have been told that this specific ECU will run the car fine with a decat.

Seeing as you have a type R you really should get it mapped for UK anyway if this hasn't been done, I expect you may get away with running a decat as you are, but not overly sensible, wait till you can get it mapped and have the decat fitted at the same time
