Engine warning light on - standard 56 WRX
Last Thursday night on the way home I noticed my engine warning light was on. I drove home carefully then called the garage.
The guy said it should go off at the next restart but I booked a check-up on Saturday morning anyway.
The light was still on for the journey to and from work on Friday, and for the drive to the garage on Saturday.
He plugged it in to his code reader and it said "No trouble codes found" (or something similar).
I set off home again with the light off and all seemed fine. Then I went out again later in the day and the light was back on again and has remained on since.
I'm presuming since it didn't come up with any codes that it's a faulty sensor. Is it worth going back to the garage again or should I try giving the car a good run out as it mainly gets short journeys.

Worth a try at another garage, I would also invest in buying one yourself off eBay. They are not expensive.
It wouldn't come on for no reason , does the car feel any different?

should have a fault code or 'historic' fault codes list available to be viewed on the reader. Doesn't mean it actualy stored it though, should and actual are two different things lol

I will have a look at buying one myself now I've seen how easy it was to plug in. Do you think it could just be the amount of rain recently that's caused the sensor to have an issue?

could be any number of things, in fact any of the fault codes that could flash up, afraid no real way to tell without plugging in. If it is blank then you wont learn anything more. i suspect best way will be to see if it comes on again. If not then don't worry about it.
o hang on, it was on when they tried to read it but nothing came up?

My random guess would be secondary air system. Fault comes and goes until it stays, then costs a fortune to change bits to resolve.
You need to read the historical faults to check, if stored. Or buy yourself a cheap ODB2 reader and keep it in the glove box to check when the CEL next comes on.
If the engine check light is on... there will be a code!

It has never come on before Thursday, and besides his reset at the garage on Saturday it has been on all the time I've been driving it since then.
I'll give him another call tonight and see what he advises. It was only serviced late November so I'm hoping it's nothing major.
Would this be the sort of thing I'd need?

Yea definitely buy one because what the garages charge you to use there's you could buy one for the cost if one visit . It's difficult to say, my lights on and it's just an exhaust sensor which was removed when I removed a lot of my cats, it just needs resetting. You just need to make sure it's nothing too serious, but if it was I'm sure it would put the ecu into 'safe' mode so you can't drive over a certain rpm.

It got some new wheels put on in November but they're the same size as the old ones so I don't suppose it's to do with that?

I just called the garage and I'm taking it in on Thursday.
I'm not quite sure what's going on though as he just said on the phone that none of the codes that came up were anything major, so I'll try and get a full answer this time.

Try Andy Turner motor engineering in Leeds, he's read codes for me before and swapped my clutch a couple of weeks ago & had changed my exhaust system a while back too.

I know exactly where that is thank you, it's always good to get a recommendation too.
I will persevere with the current garage as he's going to wait around for me on Thursday and presumably he won't charge for another reading.
I did get many recommendations to use him so I'm not sure why I'm having issues. I hope it's just a blip.

I am so fed up of driving at low revs, and you wouldn't believe the cars I'm allowing to beat me away from the lights
