I had exactly same problem when my P1 was returned to me after an engine swap, paid the mechanic in cash while the car was running nice and sweet, but drove it home about 5 miles and when warm it idled very erratic.
He suggested swap my idle control valve with the one on my old engine, but it made no difference, and my old engine run 100% with that control valve.
Due engine gradually running worse I have now fitted New Coilpack, Performance HT leads, genuine scooby MAF and spark plugs... car still runs like it has an erratic misfire and idles badly.
I was advised the poor idle problem was possibly an air leak, but had no luck finding any air leaks, squirted WD40 around all hoses, suggest you try this first.
Hope you have more luck then me sorting problem out.
