Default Exhaust Rattle, 56 Hawk STI

Hi guys,

My first post here, but have been lurking in the shadows for some time now! Picked up a 56 Hawk STI about 3 months ago now, not had any problems with it except for this slight (but quite annoying) rattle which i think is coming from the exhaust.

I've jacked the car up and taken a video, anyone have any ideas?

It's only really the first 20 seconds that has the rattle.

Many thanks!
D

Dip the clutch, my Spec D used to do that and I concluded it was the clutch release bearing being a little rattly when cold

That defo sound like part of a heat shield. I had a stone in mine once and it sounded like that only it was constant.

Get it up on ramps and have a good poke about

Thanks guys.

The Turbo heat-shield is under/behind the intercooler, right? Sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car for sure though, even when i'm under it?

Cheers,
D

If it's def from the rear to mid section it has to be a fixation point or internal baffle in either the silencer or centre pipe / yes when you lift hood the turbo is to the left firewall get your hand on the metal heat shield ( not when hot ) give it a wiggle , you will tell if it's slack.
Failing all that , your goin to have to get it up on a ramp & start shaking till you find the culprit.... I'm sure you will find the annoyance

Thanks again.

Checked the turbo heat shield once it had cooled down (man, this car certainly keeps it's warmth!) and absolutely no wiggle in it at all. I'll try and jack up the car again tomorrow, weather permitting, and get under it properly and give everything a good shake.

Am i right in thinking all the sections of the exhaust are bolted together so it could just be a loose bolt, or would it all be welded?

Did you try dipping the clutch to see if the noise disapears ?

I will try that when i get in it a little later, however i've heard the rattle with the clutch dipped at lights when i've been revving, so pretty sure it's not that. But will try again and let you know!

Hey,

Found the little bugger. Look at this video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4xpp...ature=youtu.be

It's loose, so i bunged some tissue between it and the pipe, revved the engine (sweet spot was 2,500 for the rattle) and no more rattle. No matter how hard i tried. Removed the tissue, rattles back.

I've attached a picture too.

So happy i've finally found it. However, not sure what the fix is? Or what to even look for, can't find this part anywhere... any ideas folks?

Cheers,
D

You have a temp option which would be a big jubilee clip around it to secure it and get it booked in to have it welded back on.

Am I right in thinking its 2.5" diameter on that pipe? Might be able to get an old friend to do the weld in a couple of weeks. Not sure how much it would cost to get done elsewhere...

+1 even as a temp option would last till that pipe dies anyway Then replace it with a nice straight through pipe

Yes your correct, 2.5" pipe. Small bit of cleaning up with a grinder and a weld top and bottom 15 mins work at the most providing you can get well under It of course

Sweet thanks guys. Put the Jubilee cips on either side of it this morning, rattle free! Very nice. I've also got some Metal Epoxy Putty which i might use should it come back.

Going to phone a few garages and see what they want to do it, places like Kwik Fit etc will only now replace the section! Which is a bit naff...

Either way, very happy now. No more rattle as i put the power down. Thanks all! Well worth the subscription
