I don't suppose the car's left hand side (standing in front of car, looking at the engine) black cam cover still has the silver sticker on it?

If so, its black text is the full engine number.

P.S. Your English is better than half of the 'natives' on here.

And a 1000% times better than my German.

It will be a Version 1~2 engine with 4cam 16 valve on the cam covers and coil packs mounted directly on the spark plug.
Version 3~4 will have a centrally mounted coil pack on the inlet manifold.
Version 5~6 will have the coil pack mounted to the right hand side of the inlet manifold.

Gruss von England

Could be Open deck or closed deck on a EJ20G (oct '93 ~ jan '96) joz
Cross hatching on the crankcases would tell for sure.
No 5th injector (V2 RA) on the inlet manifold, but the inlet manifold could have been swapped as never seen a version 1~2 sti/ra with a red manifold from the factory.

My guess would be Version 1~2 WRX or even an early legacy engine ( if it has 2 bolt holes for the coil packs on the cam covers) as the cam sensor has the long harness on it.

You can ALWAYS count on Mick the Wizard.

Mick, which phase-1 engined models had the CDB? I assume it's the STi II variants, no?

Without stripping the engine to examine the internals, no way for sure to tell.

Bit of a lucky dip concerning ODB/CDB's, STi V2 RA did have CDB as did some of the real early STi V2 and Legacy's.
Some of the later production run STi V2's had ODB with bore squirters.
EJ20K from sept '96 onwards came with ODB's.

Interesting. Those crazy Japs.

Mick, is my STi V's EJ207 a SCDB, or a ODB?

ODB on the STi V5~6 from the factory ( unless the block was changed when it was rebuilt)

Thought so. (I heard someone say it was a SCDB, so wanted to know for sure).

In your own experiences of pattern of failures, what seems to be an ODB's typical max bhp level?
IRO c.450-500, I'm guessing?

But I suppose either the OEM pistons or a bottom end failure are the weaker points (i.e. the limiting factors); not the actual block itself?

Have a groovy Xmas, Mick.

Cylinder pressure and boost pressure are the limiting factors of any block but have seen many ODB's around the 500 mark when they are assembled correctly.
As you quite rightly said above, the rotating parts would be the limiting factor on an OEM block.

Merry Christmas to you and your family too

Mick
