Default Knock

Hi all just a quick question. If my classic turbo is knocking would I get the check engine light. Just thought if it was knocking the knock sensor would pick this up and I'd get a fault code ?? Any input is much appreciated

UK car or import?

What fuel are you using?

Is the CEL light on?

Sometimes the knock sensor just needs the mating surface cleaning up.

Uk turbo 2000 1999 no mods. Using either tescos 99 Ron or optimax no check engine light car is quiet on cold start then starts to knock still quietly as I bring the revs up it goes quiet so only knocks at idle

You can hear it knock or is it just the CEL light?

I think your talking about engine knock as in bearings or you mean detonation/knock?

Does it do it when the engine is nice and hot?

It could be piston slap.

Either way I'd start saving.

Haha yeah it's a constant knock but it goes away as I rev the car. And it'll be after Christmas before I spend any money on her

Big ends knock when you rev to say 3k rpm and lef off the gas you wil hear knock knock knock etc as it slows down.

Are you sure its not a tapping sound that increases speed with revs?
If so its probably the lifters.

If its a tapping sound that stops once the engine is hot it could be piston slap.

Or it could be noisy injectors lol

The knock sensor won't as a rule put the check engine light on. It will send the signal to the ecu, but the ecu will merely take some timing off to safe limits rather than light the cel.
So you rarely know when it's even doing it.

Both scoobs I've had have been slappers, just right for my tastes! First time I heard it was about a week after I'd bought my first one and the panic I felt was mental.

Thanks for input guys. Took the right hand side timing belt cover off today to find bottom camshaft pulley (I think) has a piece missing cracked and snapped off. would this perhaps cause the timing to be out and causing the knock. I have a picture but don't know how to upload it
