Default Not boosting well

Hi,

When i got my 2001 bug eye wrx i though it seemed down on power and now i have had it a few weeks it seems to of got worse.

I dont know but i would of expected to see boost around 2.5/3k, is this right? mine doesnt seem to come on untill about 4.5/5k and then not very much. kind of hesitates.

i have just done everything. oil, filter, fuel filter, plugs and cleaned the MAF. the only think i havnt done is clean the air filter as it has a k&n typhoon kit. thats dirty. a job for the weekend.

i squirted everthing with leak dedection spray and reved it up to see if i could see any leaks but i couldnt.

Im wondering if there is any usual suspects to check for first?

any help would br great. thanks

Leak detection spray? Got any more info on that?

I'd be just interested as to what it is exactly, and how it works etc.

It's basically like a soapy water solution in a can , spray it on and it creates bubbles when there's a leak

Evening.

Well i had a quick look after work and felt for the resrictor pill and its definatly in the hose. had a close look at ll tha vac hose and i cant see any splits. i havnt cleaned the boost solonoide yet. the car came with some silly gauge and the boost one doesnt work properly so i capped off the boost supply to that thinking that could be the cause but still no better.

im wondering, if you guys rev you car on the spot. can you see the actuator rod move?

mine just sits still.

Quick test for you mate, pull the pipe off the actuator and put a screw in it, then drive it first and second only as it will fuel cut in third (only do this as a test ), if it pulls hard from down low lyk it should i will say your boost control solenoid is stuck open

By new best option but a working second hand one will be cost effective, common fault on bugs and early blobs

so a little update for you all.

I took off the bcs and used a car charger to power it up and i could hear a plunger kind of noise so i got someone to squirt brake cleaner through it while i put power on and off to it and it worked fine stopping the flow and brake cleaner and then alowing it through. it now makes more af a click sound rather then the plunger sound so i guess it was due a clean anyway.

Put it back on and the car was no better really so i thought i will do the last job on the car thats not been done clean the K&N airfilter. its sat in the wing behind the bumper and i couldnt really see it.

i did happend to have a spare cone in the shed that was like new from an old random 57i kit which i think i bought for my rover 416i many many moons ago so i thought i will see if i can put it on while i clean the filter thats on.

Jacked the car up and popped back the arch liner, pulled the cone out and my god, it was rotton and blocked. i have never seen a filter like it. Im glad i had the spare filter as i managed to get it on as no way was the original was going back on.

wish i had got a picture for you guys. the previous owner must of been driving round with it on for years with zero maintanance

Anyway the car pulls like a train now. poor thing was starved of oxygen.

all is well now
