Default Turbo shaft play

How much turbo shaft side play would be considered acceptable on a TD04? I only ask because a pulled my downpipe off earlier to weld a second lambda boss in and had a check of the turbo.

The shaft on mine can move side to side maybe 2mm or so. I had experienced a little white/blue smoke in the recent past and thought I might be having some issues with the turbo!

I think there would be a small amount of play due to oil space being required. Some of the play will go when the oil is at full operating temperature and pressure but I was wondering how much is ok

The last turbo that came off mine had scoring on the compressor housing where the blades had been catching. Moving the shaft by hand i could make it hit either side of the housing easily. Even so, up until it was removed i hadn't noticed any lack in performance or excessive smoke.

As long as its not touching the sides it will be fine as all turbos have slight movement

It's not touching the sides at the moment. The car has 102k on it now and I'm pretty sure it's the original turbo unit. I might rebuild it sometime soon as a maintenance job just.

If its your only car id run it until youve time to repair, if its you 2nd car id be tempted just to repair it although might be cheaper finding a good low mileage unit

It's my second car Steve so there's no panic with it. I've got the whole exhaust off at the minute to get a second lambda sensor fitted at the bottom of the downpipe as well. Might be worthwhile doing the turbo now!

It's never ending! I'm fitting a Zeitronix ZT-2 wideband AFR controller at the moment which displays values from the AFR sensor and can control the fuelling if required. I'm also connecting EGT, boost and fuel sensors to it as well. It records all the data for download to my laptop and can also be used live! Very cool bit of kit.

After that I'm fitting an ESL board to my unmappable 8S ECU. Then I can map the car to suit the upgrades the previous owner had fitted but never mapped it for.

The wife loves me these days, not!

There's some pretty cool stuff on eBay for TD04/5s like upgrade compressor wheels and housings. Make a hybrid one yourself! They are made by Kinugawa, there's a thread on here somewhere by someone who bought one of their turbochargers. Might be worth a punt!

I thought I read somewhere that a hybrid TD04 can be as good as a VF23 for spool but will not tail off boost as early?? And it was fit for more than 300bhp I think. I was thinking of going the VF route too but can decide which one!

good job lol, don't know should you be worried mine are looking worn was seeing if there was any point in getting uprated adjustable ones or replace with the standard ones, the price of a hybrib is high also, there is a lot to choose from turbo wise, I drive my car hard and I think my tdo4 tails off from 15 or 16psi to 12 past 5k revs in 5th ,I want the boost all the way
