Default Noise when of the throttle in second and first gear?

I've had my impreza only a month or so and have recently noticed a rough sounding noise when off the throttle in second and first gear.
It drives very smoothly it's just the rattling / grinding noise I'm concerned about. Is there anything to be concerned about or should I just ignore it?

Thanks in advance,

Do you know what clutch is fitted. I, and others I know, have this problem with excedy pink clutches even from new. They do drive fine though

Does it sound like clicking noise like a ratchet? If so I'd suspect the front diff bearings in the gear box.

The clutch is standard original as far as I can gleam from the info in the service history.

Richard, I would say it was more grinding than a consistent noise like a ratchet click. I did try to see if it clicked in the taller gears and no noise, would this eliminate the front diff bearings or is that a red herring?

Thanks

If it's the front diff you tend to hear it best with the window down in a low gear on the over run. Accelerate hard in second or third then lift off & listen. You can grab the driveshafts where they go into the box & check for play, a little is fine. Also dropping the oil & looking for metal particles may be a good idea. Also check if the noise disappears on or off the clutch pedal.

Thanks I will do the check with the window down. I have tried with the clutch in and the noise disappears, if that helps?

Okay so today I took the car for a drive to try out the suggestions and it appears to have disappeared? Are there any of the components that only show a problem after a longer drive? Today I only did a 5 mile round trip to see if I could workout the noise!?

Mine sounds like its straight cut in first and second.
(Sounds like the noise it makes in reverse)

I think its the gesrbox bearings tho, ive had my impreza 6 months and i dont think its got worse and it does get it **** handed to it.

Ill keep driving it till A. It breaks or B. it gets really noisy

Oh i changed the gearbox oil a few days after buying the car to the uncle scotties cocktail

It made no difference to the car, only my wallet as i was £80 worse off after!

And pps, mine shifts totally fine, no crunching at all. Just the whine

Thanks Fudgey,

I think il just drive it as it shifts seamlessly so I hope it's nothing major. However yesterday I noticed when doing a minor amount of reversing the couch began to smell so could be a clutch!? Good job I love my car : )
