Default Emissions woes (urgent)

Hi all. Having a problem getting through the emissions test with my 1997 type R. It usually runs with a 3" decat turbo back system. I bought a second hand stock Subaru downpipe and fitted that before the test (no second cat) and its failed on CO.

Could the problem be that the car has been remapped for the decat, and fitting the cat is throwing it out? I doubt that's the case, the garage seem to think the second hand cat is likely to be the problem and getting a new one will solve it.

Should I be able to pass with just the downpipe cat fitted (no second cat)? I believe I should. I've been looking at this website - can anyone confirm what the difference is (and £70) extra for the Japanese import cat? Thanks!

What were the readings? Will help diagnose the problem. Also was the cat very hot when the test was done?

First Fast idle test

Co 0.685. Fail
Hc 73. Pass
Lambda. 0.976. Pass

Second fast idle test

CO 0.482. Fail
HC 63. Pass
Lambda. 0.982. Pass

Natural idle
CO. 2.695%. Fail

I thought about giving it a rag to get it hot but a) the car has no tax or MOT and b) I wouldn't be happy gunning it with a cat fitted as its mapped for a decat

Thanks!

For what it's worth, my Hawk WRX had the following readings with only a Prodrive sport cat (Cat is in downpipe):-

Fast Idle CO 0.14 (0.20 is the limit)
HC 33ppm (200 is the limit)
Natural Idle CO 0.02 (0.30 is the limit)

Cheers,

AJS

I'm tempted to just buy a new cat and be done with it. Does anyone know in the above link what the difference is with the Japanese import version? Don't really want to spend an extra £70 on something which is gonna be used for about 10 minutes, I'm sure the normal one would fit my car?

Where you located? Surely there must be a garage near you that deals with tuner cars?

I was fortunate to find one that let my emissions slip

Most of them though will charge a little extra or some will put a full system on and send it through its mot then take it off

Would the readings suggest a cat problem (be it faulty or not up to temp) as lambda and HC have passed? Would it be dangerous for me to give the car some boost to get it warm when it's mapped for a decat??
