Default Gearbox leak

After a few weeks of oil patches forming below my 97 turbo 2000 I had a quick look under the car and can see its pretty oily around the bell housing etc. I had earlier thought it was an engine oil leak from the separator plate maybe. I got under again tonight for another look and saw that the leaking oil is really clean and smells just like gear oil. I dipped the gearbox and sure enough it's the very same oil that's under the car.

Obviously it's the shaft oil seal but I've read that a missing pilot bearing can cause this as the shaft can move about? Would there be any symptoms of a missing pilot bearing when driving?
