Smile Where to start...

Hi all.. Have a few questions as I'm new to scoobs, and haven't had an older car for long enough to forget what I had learnt years ago on older cars...

I have a 97 2.0 turbo AWD impreza wagon.

Purchased a week ago or so.

1. Smoke rises from grill on bonnet near the filter for the turbo? (not the main scoop) Failry strong burning oil smell but no puddles underneath..

2. When braking and turning hard to the right, the brakes are less effective and the pedal feels like it grinds / bumps. Almost as if there where a stone in the wheel of a shopping trolley. Doesn't do it in left lock or straight ahead, just full / medium right lock.
Had new discs and pads according to recipets with vehicle, doesn't pull to any side, ride is smooth and steering feels normal.
Hubs/ wheel nuts don't feel warm after driving.

3. Not idling sometimes, and likes a good backfire at times.. Has a prodrive 2000 exhaust system... Smells a little rich, but I'm out of touch a bit so could be wrong.

Answers on a postcard! Thank you

Hi mate.
I am no expert but for number 3 I would be looking at the maf.
You can check for fault codes easily on the classic. Just google it for instructions.

Number 1 : Rocker cover gasket leak, oil drips on hot exhaust and smokes bitch to do very common problem as heat from turbo knacks up the gasket.

Nice one guys...

Rockers are shot. Replacing week after next.

Checked the maf with garages analyser and its not the maf but something I forget the name of now.. But he advised me to gently clean the maf anyway..

As for the brakes, getting them all replaced aswell so she's going off the road till fixed!

Off to find some wd40, rags and patience !!!

Cheers!

Idle control valve? Try removing it and cleaning

Or lambda sensor?

Lambda sensor! That's the ticket...

The mechanics plug in said maf was fine but the lambda sensor wasn't working correctly..

As for brakes getting new brake pads and discs fitted.

Cheers all :-)
