Who on here is DIY'er and who is a "chequebook tuner"?
A quick poll as per the title.
I was speaking to someone on here earlier and we came to the conclusion that the majority of people will pay a garage/tuner to do their work etc.
This is no bad thing of course, i am simply just asking the question.
Ill start by saying i am a DIY'er, i only joined scoobynet to get info on rebuilding a TY754 gearbox, but it seems that no one other than the garages/tuners have done it, but hey, im sill here!
Ill do most things myself that i can do, things that i dont have the kit for, like welding ill have to pay for.
But overhauling brakes, suspension, transmission and rebuilding engines i will do.
What are your views on this?

I have changed things like turbos and injectors, and fitted my FMIC, but I happily paid for mapping and a forged engine build.
Does that make me a DIY'er or cheque book tuner

Ienjoy working on motors but,as MatthewTurb2000 said above, working on axle stands isnt always easy and as i get older gets even harder.Wish i could afford to pay someone to do the work , but then id probably get bored doing something else. it is satisfying doing it yourself though

I'm trying to learn, so DIY'ing alot but frequently punctuated by a visit to a reputable specialist so I can verify my work and get them to do "bigger" jobs.
It's not really saving me money either, spent a damn fortune on tools!

I do almost everything myself and spend the money saved on tools, have done so for years, just did the head gasket on my Rover 25 runabout a couple of weeks ago and saved over £500 and got a new torque wrench into the bargain 250 miles and counting so far and all seems ok.
The one time in the last 30 yrs I let so called pro's do a big job was the engine rebuild on my STI Type R, cost a fortune and didn't last for 10k miles taking it easy, so god knows how long it would have lasted if I caned it, not very me thinks.
So I did it again myself and caned the living daylights out of it on track actually trying to break it and it's still ok, moral of the story if you want to KNOW a job has been done right DO IT YOURSELF.

Exactly mate, there are a few people id trust to build me an eninge, but id rather have a go myself. At least that way if it fails you cant blame anyone else lol
The last engine i built made almost 400/400, but was a zetec turbo. Held together for the 200 miles the car done as id spent 5.5 years building it, got it mot'd then half a mile down the road on the way home got rear ended by a pair of pikeys who drove off.
And that was that....

Ive done various jobs on the drive like FMIC, brake lines/replace discs etc,exhaust replacment, servicing plugs and all oils etc , genral bits and pieces you can see/ get to, and know that if you undo that last nut/bolt that a load of springs and o rings aint gonna go flying out and not know where to start puttibg it back together!
When it comes to internal engine stuff and tuning i leave it to the 'pro's' although some of them id never use again.
Gearbox is on ots way out i think, and umming and arribg about takling a six speed conversion, might be a bit above my skills im wondering though....

Keen DIY'er In fact I build engines for a living, but with Subarus theres often times when I dont have the specialist knowledge or facilities to do a proper job. I then hand it over to the pros.
Some people dont know when to admit defeat or that they are out of thier depth. Hence the amount of blown up ratty scoobies out there.

Cheque book tuner, getting better at doing jobs myself but anything to do with the motor is done by RCM
Fitted seat, wheel stripped the trim, removed airbags custom battery setup all that type of stuff!

as others bit of both, just fitted my reconed calipers from scoobyworx and new pads and bled them myself and my sti rear lights. if i had a 2 or 4 post ramp at my disposal id try a lot more but as is garage do the big jobs as i just dont have a comprehensive tool set either and air tools are very handy for the inevitable stuck or seized bolt.

Check book tuner here, I reckon I would do more harm than good, and end up being a check book tuner in the end,so I miss the middle man out (me) ! And go straight for the garage!
