Default reconditioning engine must do's

Hello everyone,
im new to the site as a couple of months ago bought a version 6 sti wagon. Absolutely loved the motor on the 10 times ive driven it but to my dismay its blown up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Garage predicts that it will require a new engine or to have the existing one reconditioned. Ive decided to go for sorting the existing one but could do with some recommendations on any thing that i should have done while the engines out. Im on a budget so nothing too extreme.
any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Doug

Defo fit decent make forged rods & pistons, ACL Race bearings all round & decent head studs, and you will have a 500+ capable motor on your hands.

You must find out why/what caused the failure first, though... And which items are not reusable, etc.

But speak to David O'Brien at API - he'll offer free advice for any given budget...
