Default Fuel pump help

Im in need of a bit of help/advice here guys...

when i turn my ignition on i hear a whine that stops after 2 seconds or so, which i believe is the fuel pump priming, then i start the car as normal.

however this morning i didn't hear the whine, it was completely silent, and when i tried to start it just kept turning over and wouldn't fire up.

i left it until this afternoon, again turned the ignition on, and the primer noise was back and the car started perfectly.

again tonight the primer noise has gone and it wont start...

basically whine = START
no whine = NO START

can anyone help me by confirming that this is a "priming noise" im hearing and if i'm barking up the right tree by thinking my fuel pump is on its way out.

Cheers in advance guys.

Sounds like a pump related issue but if you can check for feed at the pump then this will tell you if pump or not. If feed then pump no good(panel in boot on right as you look from rear of car gives access to pump and wiring) , if no feed then there is a relay up above the fuses on the right hand side in the dash(there are about 5) this should click with ignition then click off after a few seconds, this is what supplies feed to pump. You should hear the relay if you listen carefully or it's better if you can feel relay click on n off(but hard to get hand up in tight space).
Hope this helps.

brilliant thanx for all the replies.

Now the car is a completely standard 1995 WRX JDM (260bhp model)

what fuel pump should i be looking at? the walbro 255 is said to be fine for unmodified wrx's, but been reading on here that its not the one to go for, im having trouble sourcing a walbro 190.

can anyone offer any advice on what to replace it with.

Hrc do really good pumps for a far better price than walbro. Loads of people use them from this forum , do a search for them.
They are on eBay or direct through website, they do various LPH types depending on power your running .

Nope. Fuel delivery is decided by the ECU and fuel pressure regulator not the fuel pump. All its job is, is to pump in the required fuel as requested by the ECU.

this is from their page:

"HRC RACING 255lph Fuel Pumps Include:
GSS341 / GSS342 In Tank Fuel Pump
Wiring Harness Adapter
Fuel Tank Filter

Indicate on order which pump you prefer standard pump is 342, although 341 is fine for same applications (only difference is offset on input/outlet, which doesnt matter with hoses attached, if wanting kit for , volvo, fiat coupe/turbo ask for 340 Kit."

any idea what i order? not sure what 341 or 342 relates to

While changing the pump, have a good look at the pump connectors especially the connector under the rear seat, RH side. My connector was partially melted.
