Default What is this?

Just got the impreza on wednesday and as you do with a new car i was looking round the engine bay and noticed this and was wondering what it is and why would the pipe be disconnected from it and bunged? I have a 2006 WRX.

looks like the recirc valve pipe, i`m guessing you are running a vent to atmos dump valve

ive only had the car 2 days and the dump valve looks standard, certainly doesn't make any noise. Will this effect performance?

That's a secondary air pump if I'm not mistaken. It comes on on cold start up for a minute or so, to burn off catalysts in the exhaust I think.

Not sure why it would be disconnected though?

Would guess that the previous Owner had problems with the 2ndary air system and has pulled the fuses, either that or the air pump no longer works.

If the valves are still operating then exhaust gas can travel up that pipe into the engine bay and usually destroys the air pump.
