Default How do you take a 2000 Impreza ignition barrel apart?

I have the barrel of the column, but how do you take the barrel apart? I've twisted the key and tried pushing the tabs but it doesn't appear to be doing anything?

Thanks

I believe with the later classics, the barrel is all part of the steering lock......

what do you want to do ?

Ive taken 3 classic ignition barrels apart down to their bare bones, i have removed the tumblers on all 3 of them to match them up to the existing keys etc,its easy to do

if you want to remove the internals, remove the barrel from the column, which it sounds like you have already, now, remove the black cover and you will see a small brass push nipple, push this in and with the key in the barrel, turn the key and the barrel will come out of the holder

you now have access to the internals and its straight forward from here what to do, i should of taken photos LOL as it would be easier to explain

Yeah i want to break the barrel down,

I took the black plastic off but can't see no brass push nipple. There is 2 little silver bits but they won't push in despite turning the key various positions?

Thanks

right, here u go

this is the brass push pin i was on about, push this down with a small sharp screwdriver and when you do, insert key into barrel and turn the key to the right,u will feel the pin drop down a bit more and you then need to pull the barrel out of the holder

like this

Next, pull this securing pin out of its place

once the pin is pulled out, twist the front of the barrel to remove the casing, BUT BE VERY CAREFUL AS YOU WILL NOW BE PARTING IT AND THERE ARE SMALL WHITE CLIPS AND SPRINGS AT THIS STAGE, SO BE VERY CAREFUL AND REMEMBER WHERE AND HOW THEY GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now,insert the key, twist and use the metal bar at the back to push out the internal part of the barrel

There you have it LOL

im crap at writing a How to but once your doing it, it should make more sense LOL

good luck !!

Thanks for all that, but the little pins are not budging at all?
Was that ignition off a phase 1 or 2, mines a 2 and looks slightly different?

Thanks

From the pictures I posted originally, it would appear quite obviously that the later (phase 2) is not designed to allow the barrel to be removed as easily as the early version.

You would probably have to drill out the pin to the right of the screw shown in your picture.........
