Default CEL on!!

As title, Car seems to run fine, It came on when II over took some one, Is there anyway to check for fault codes without a tester? For example on my vxr you put foot on brake and clutch and turn it on and it comes up on the dash...
Cheers

Think I've figured it, car was trying to overboost, overtaking up a big hill under load in very cold weather = overboost and fuel cut, what do we think??

Fuel cut feels like you have jumped on the brakes momentarily, you will know when it happens, by the steering wheel shaped dent in your forehead.

Funny that I just took my cousin home to the next town. On the way back the cel came on. Only thing I could think of was mistakenly filling up with normal unleaded. Then again about 90% of my driving is off boost.

I nursed it home. Stopped at a railway crossing. Switched off and on and the cel was gone. I will cross my fingers and read the fault code tomorrow.
