Default Fuel pump assembly/housing differences?

Hi guys,

What are the differences between these two pumps housings?

The one on the left has some cylinder thing where the one on the right is straight hard pipe. What's the difference there? Also the one on the left seems to have that piece on the left further extended down also?

So what's the difference, and what benefits/drawbacks of either?

Thanks
