concerned about clunking noise

this has already been posted in brakes and wheels, but so far no replies, so mods can i post it here too
car is MY98 turbo with std rear brake set up.
the sympton is described as an intermitent clunking noise coming from the rear left (as though something is loose), almost in time with the wheel revolution when under braking (and only under braking), hard or soft. it is more noticable at lower speeds ie 5-10mph pulling up to junctions/traffic lights.
it is non-existant when the brakes are cold but gets a louder as brakes get hotter.
the car has just had its 45k service and nothing was picked up (i noticed the noise before the service and was expecting them to say something, but they didnt)
ive just stripped the brake calliper down, no probs with calliper, pads or disc. there are no loose bolts/nuts and all bushes are ok. ive had a good visual check and there is no evident damage.
could this be the drive shaft or something??? if so any ideas as to cost.

if the brake seems ok mate, it may well be a driveshaft as these tend to clunk intermitently....as for cost, dont really know mate.
is the car high milage?
worth noting that the nuts on the top mounts of the shocks (accessed from behind the rear seat) can become loose and cause a knocking. however saying that, probably not this if you say it sounds as if its with each revolution.
one other thing...how much clearance is there between the wheel and caliper? also, have you got adhesive weights hidden on the inner part of the wheel....maybe something is catching?

callipers are std as per the wheels, so nothing is or should catch. and there's nothing hanging behind the wheel.
i think im gonna go to subaru and ask them, see if they can shed some light?

there is one other possibility. the handbrake mechanism inside the centre drum of the disc. the mechanism has a bit of rotational movement. if it is siezing rubbing against the inside of the drum slightly, it will heat up more as you drive. it might then get quite tight and at low speeds the mechanism may catch the drum a bit, and then spring back, hence the clunking. if it is this, it wouldnt happen at high speed due to the fast spinning disc/drum holding the mechanism to the extent of its movement.
may be worth having a look. just let the handbrake off with the wheel removed and turn the disc by hand to see whether the handbrake shoes are rubbing....
