Default Vibration, going insane now !!!

Ok, basically I've had a loud vibration coming from the rear of my car for some time but it's finally starting to send me mad. It does it in any gear at anything over 3000 rpm when the accelerator is released. For example, foot down in 3rd up to say 4K and then fully back off. It's pretty loud and can be heard clearly from both inside and outside the car.
Only does it above 3K and won't do it when standing still.

I've removed every bloody heatshield in sight and had my pry bar everywhere today. Nothing seems out of place, there is a little bit of play in the rear beam (across the entire width of car with bush each end) but not sure if that's normal and there is also a small amount of up/down and in/out movement in the rear drive shafts (again, not sure if that's normal).
Thunder8 and myself have been scratching our heads all day and just about out of ideas.

What's your thoughts ?
Anybody had something similar ?

I've had something similar on my V4 for ages - to me it feels like a thrust bearing (clutch release bearing to you youngsters!) or maybe a gearbox on the way out

I'm waiting for it to get worse so my mechanic can say "ohyeah, I know what that is" when he hears it

Mine has done it for an age and hasn't got any worse. Had new gearbox fitted and it did it before hand so know its not that.
It's more from the rear though.

Thought that the shafts were ok, there is some play but not sure if it's more than expected. Maybe you chaps could have a look on Saturday (at the pod) and see what you think.

diff bearings make a wirring noise on rundown from speed , a knackered tapered roller bearing will vibrate like a **** with no load on rundown from speed also , could be that

Thanks buddy, could well be that then by the sounds of it. Putting 400+ bhp through it can't be helping much either, may just put my spare one on then and see what happens.

Anybody got any tips on swapping it, looks like a ball ache job.

Rear diff isn't that bad to be honest. Better on ramps though, did it on my driveway, took about two hours. But need a second pair of hands to get the thing in place again

Well chaps....

Fitted another rear diff tonight and the problem is still there, if anything it's slightly louder.

Basically I accelerate in say 4th gear up to say 5K, back right off and let the revs fall. As soon as they hit 3K I get this noise. Almost sounds like teeth slightly grinding.
If I push the clutch it is goes away instantly.

What do you guys think ?

Had Ren lay in the back tonight while I drove, he seems to think its coming from drivers side at the back.
He wants it on a ramp for a better look so no further forward at the min.

Hello Matty,

do you have any updates on this? My scooby started to do this right after I had my mechanics change the flywheel to a lightweight one and the clutch to an pink box exedy uprated one. Grinding noise on overrun from 3000-2000rpm from the back of the car. Had no issues before the change, so the gearbox and diff should still be ok. Just wanted to narrow the problem down, before I have them change the clutch again...
So if you have any tips for me I'd be very grateful.

I also made a short vid for reference. The noise can be heard quite well at 1:00+

Sounds similar to mine buddy.
I haven't got any further with it as the car is in the paintshop. Would be very interested to hear your outcome after your guys have changed the clutch.

Hey Matty,

problem not sorted yet. I went to 3 different Subaru dealers and finally got a good hint from one who is also rallying. He asked me about the exchange clutch and flywheel and mentioned, that those aftermarket parts don't have the dampening, that the Subaru parts have.
After that I had a poke around here on Scoobynet and found some threads describing this problem. Here are the links just for convenience:
https://www.scoobynet.com/general-technical-10/897272-pinkbox-excedy-fitted-no-judder-but-odd-noise.html#post10141850
https://www.scoobynet.com/showpost.p...2&postcount=13
https://www.scoobynet.com/drivetrain...elaration.html (posts 3, 6, 11, 14, 18 and especially 13)
https://www.scoobynet.com/drivetrain...ion-noise.html
https://www.scoobynet.com/showpost.p...0&postcount=10
https://www.scoobynet.com/showpost.p...25&postcount=3

The first one is the most important to me because of the video. Exchanged some messages with "53" and it seems to be the combination of clutch and flywheel which is causing this behaviour. Nothing too serious from what I understand but still very annoying. This is also backed up by the fourth link I posted above.
I'll take my car to the mentioned dealer this week to have him check everything and most likely change the lightweight flywheel to a genuine Subaru one. I really hope this fixes everything...
Sorry, I can't help you more. Please keep me posted on the progress on your car. Would be great to know, if it's a bearing on the gearbox if the flywheel change doesn't do the trick.

That's what I was asking myself, too. To swap or not to swap... Worst part of this is, that "testing" is always quite expensive... Cost me 700€ just to get the clutch and flywheel in...
And having multiple possibilities for the cause of this problem doesn't make it easier...
I'll have my car done on Thursday or Friday so my results might be to late for you. Sorry

Also found another thread:
https://www.scoobynet.com/drivetrain-11/473901-diy-timing-belt-and-clutch-replacement-done.html#post5236611

So I definitely will be changing the lightweight flywheel. Being able to quickly heel&toe is not worth the trouble on a road car. Also thought about clutch alternatives but I need the higher clamping pressure of the Exedy clutch since the genuine Subaru one was slipping badly...
