Wearing Noise on decelaration???

Default Wearing Noise on decelaration???

Hi Guys, Finally got my new excedy clutch & lightened flywheel fitted then the problems began......

When i first start the car and till it gets to optimum temp the gear change is fine.

When warm its really hard to Upshift or downgear which can be quiet un-nerving at speed, plus it starts to sound like there's a wearing noise as well as being really horrible to change gear, sound like your grinding most of the time???

I've check the gearbox oil, it seems fine.... HELP or Advice!!!

Can't help you, but what you say is interesting. I also have a excedy clutch and lightened flywheel. When I lift off the gas I can hear a bearing-type noise. It sounds metal-on-metal to me. I presumed it was the clutch release bearing on the way out, but that's just a guess.

No problems shifting gear though.

I have never had the stiffness of chaning gear but I get the noise too on lift off on the lower gears.

There are two things that it could be....

One the thing known as the flywheel rattle phenomenon, try a google search for the full write up. Basically the lightened flywheel is not in balance with the rest of the geartrain and resonates under certain conditions.

The other is.. You know the friction plate and the little springs that sit horizontally across it. Well the holes for the springs are machine pressed and if they are slightly too big the springs can rattle under certain conditions causing the noise.

I personally believe the second option as I have heard this said by a few repected specialsts.

I too get this noise since having an exedy clutch fitted... any one have any updates to what it could be? Should I be worried?

Got exactly the same on my STi 5 after fitting a excedy and lightened flywheel from API. Once warmed up and on decelaration in 3rd and 4th mainly i get a really horrible noise from the box that sounds like metal/bearings grinding. Gear change is fine though.

Has anyone got a definitive answer to what this is, i was wondering if it was gearbox wear although it didnt do this until fitting the clutch and flywheel. I had the fluid changed and checked the magnet in the bottom of the gearbox and there were no fillings of metal only a few shardes from what the chap told me was a shim that gets worn on these boxes but nothing to worry about.

Gearchange is fine for me as well... everything appears to work normally. Its just really noisy and sometimes embarassing when driving down the road. The noise is quite loud.

I had a new box fitted at the same time and the clutch did this prior to the box being replaced.

Any clutch experts out there!?

Sounds like there is a comon problem with either the Excedy clutch or API flywheel?? Perhaps David at API could advise?

I am thinking more towards the clutch itself or the bearing used in the clutch kit. I had a re-skimmed flywheel put in with the exedy clutch.

Yup same here mate, clutch and flywheel put in together. Both parts from API and fitted by a Subaru main dealer mechanic.

I've had EXACTLY the same problems with a lightweight Exedy flywheel/clutch kit, so have numerous others if you check i-club or nasioc.

The light flywheel causes gear rattle on deceleration, worst in 3. gear between 3500-3000 rpm. The 6MT gearbox is espcially prone to develop this problem.

The noise should not cause any accelerated drive train wear, but it IS unbearable to live with. You can reduce the noise by increasing the front/rear tyrre pressure difference, it also helps to increase the front/rear differential bevel preload (the latter a bit "over the top" though).

We sell many, many, of these clutches and it seems that some cars are just a bit more susceptible to the overrun noise thing than others.

There is no direct traceable link between the APi light flywheel and a standard one making a noise. IE I have had people comment about this noise with standard flywheels. It also seems to go away after a while - almost as if something that has been disturbed settles back into its niche and then all is OK again.

The difficulty is that there is nothing to see, to be able to categorically say there is something wrong with the clutch.

We will of course replace any faulty clutch anytime during the 12 months. Just that no-one can say exactly what might be ' wrong ' and what the fault is, Least of all me.

We recently replaced, for the first time, a flywheel that didn't appear to balance up OK. The customer noticed a vibration at 1500 rpm that wasn't there before. We changed the clutch and flywheel and vibration is cured.

The flywheel proved to be out by 5.7 grammes. The flywheel was clearly a rogue, when we looked carefully at it, it had holes drilled all over the edges, when we re-checked it. That's one quarter of an ounce in 15.4 pounds. Not much is it.? When we re-balanced it to perfection, the 3 holes we drilled were in a completely different place.....

Now it's on a car and all is fine. What I am saying is that sometimes the very smallest thing can cause a problem and it can and will be very difficult to decide what that may be.

Let the things settle down and we'll see what happens over a longer period.

PS We also tried to identify a very similar noise with an AP Racing clutch some time back for a guy from Bristol, who had had asupply and fitting job done at another ' Subaru specialist ' One that I respect, and he wanted a second opinion.

We advised then, the same as now - you won't be able to see anything wrong therefore changing a clutch ***** nilly on a guess is not what a manufacturer will do.

The problem went away and thankfully so did he. I didn't want to get into an argument with the original supplier.

I have a sti version 3 and i fitted an exedy clutch and exedy light flywheel about 2k miles ago in the last few days i have developed a god awful noise on deceleration in 2nd 3rd and 4th witch imediately goes away on load[ it sounds like a drill drilling through metal with the hammer action on] i have wheel freed the car on a two post ramp but it does not do it under those circumstances so seems to need the drag of the car to get it to do it.I cant tell exactly where its coming from exactly ....my work mate thaught it might be from towards the rear but im not so sure.Im wondering if this is the same thing as described in this thread?Apart from the awful noise it drives fine.

hi its the clutch i changed the lot gbox flywheel ect dont ask long story lol put me old clutch back in gone sent the thing back got new 1 noise of death back got the hump so left it in 5000 miles on it. i turn the raido up fixed

Interesting thread i have a v2 wrx import and mainly when decelerating doing 30mph or more in gear i get a sort of grindy noise. BUT when i put the foot back on the loud pedal it goes away and same when i put her in neutral.
Just out of interest when coasting down a hill or even on a straight road when doing 30mph or more and then decelerating has any one else put the car in neutral while coasting and notice the noise goes away if so it could be related to what i have?

UPDATE: i decided to check and replace the gearbox and rear diff oil [castrol syntrax 75/90] and the rear diff oil was realy black and to me smelt abit like EP90 or something similar.....anyway replaced and low and behold the noise is completely gone now.I cant quite believe its gone it was that loud.
