Default K&N or HKS?

I currently have a K&N on my car but was looking at the way the air flows from bumper and through CAI and was wondering if a HKS mushroom would be better as the air can flow straight through and not just in general direction of filter.

I have looked at a mini scoop for the bonnet but don't really want to spoil the clean look of my baby.

Also looked at making some sort of heat shield but can't figure out how to get round the FMIC and ABS pipes.

Isn't foam supposed to have better filtration than a cotton gauze. I know a K&N type filter flows more air. But I'm pretty sure the foam filters 'filter' better.

I'll post up the link of the test when I find it.

Me personally. I've a massoof ITG filter on mine.

Cheers for the replys,

I would go huge but I seem to be suffering from heat soak, which is why I'm looking at other options.

For love nor money, i cant find that test on youtube. i think it was by a company by true foam that did the test. Was an intresting watch.

Is yours classic or newage?

ive tested inlet temps on mine. after the engine is warm, and at idle. temps can raise from 23-33c when your moving along the dropped to roughly 16-18c.

Itntercooler temps at idle when warm. it can really vary, 35-55deg, but drops rapidly when moving along from roughly 14-17c.

Im going front mount soon. But im not overly concerned on heat soak as yet.

The other thing you could do is, get a turbo blanket, heat wrap your headers up pipe, an down pipe. really makes a difference bud

Cheers buddy,

Sorry, its a classic.

Up and downpipes wrapped and on stock headers with heatshields. Ive got a VF35 with heatshields.

I only noticed the heat soak when it was really hot and dry recently, car didn't feel as willing as normal.

It won't, it's just protecting itself by pulling the timing a tad. Turbo blankets a good one mate.

I've only had my Bug a few weeks. Got LOTS of plans. But gotta tip toe round the wife so she doesn't know. Hoping to strap a VF35 to it soon.

Regarding the filter choice - there are more experienced guys on here to help you than me

But regarding the mini-scoop - I put one on my previous Classic & the MAF failed within weeks... I'm pretty sure it was due to it allowing excess moisture down onto the filter & into the MAF.

Whether it was coincidence or not I don't know, but I won't be putting one on my present Classic !

Hi there

Personally would go with K&N,those foam filters(ITG,HKS etc.) are not the best on the long run and mainly they're not serviceable/cleanable

From test have biggest increase in power(3-5bhp)against the normal Air filters, but filtering is not the best, noise from foam filters is awesome, but sound from K&N is awesome too,if you are not running DV

About the CAIK,would have look just for cold air induction feed which can help

"they're not serviceable/cleanable"

Yes they are.

Foam will out last a KnN but they are oily anfd greasy with less filtration.

When I bought my 2002 wrx it had a powertec cone filter, after advice on here I put the standard air box back on with a pipercross pro r foam panel filter, difference is very noticeable, I've gained lots of power and still have the noise, would recommend it to anyone and never have a cone filter on a scoob as it just doesn't work as well as standard, had car on the dyno last week and with only mods a decat exhaust and remap made 276bhp & 276 ftlb torque

If running a maf based car then k&n over the hks everytime, the hks filter will flow alot better than the k&n but the downside is it lets all the small particles of dust and debri through which will destroy the maf.
