Default Knock sensor replacement

So yeah, I posted a few days ago about the check engine light coming on. It seems like I'm going to have to try and replace it. I've been advised to buy a genuine Subaru part but apparently the knock sensor can sometimes still be working if I take it out and re-fit it.

I've had a look at some of the posts and links on other parts of google for what to do. I believe it's as 'simple' as taking off the intercooler and then replacing it.. that's way out of my league unfortunately.. I'd probably end up doing a lot of damage if I tried it myself.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to take it and how much it will cost? Subaru garage? specialist? I'm located in Stafford.

Sorry but I'm just not prepared to risk damaging my car by playing with things that I don't understand :-)

I'm located in Staffordshire, I'd probably be happy to have a go at taking off the intercooler, but I've heard that it's not as simple as just taking it off and unscrewing the sensor. I've contacted a few garages so far, hopefully should get a reply tomorrow.

Hello Winston and thanks, that's nice of you, it's a 2000 WRX STI JDM, version 6.

Will have a go at removing the intercooler tomorrow after work and see what I can do. If that doesn't fix it, I'm probably going to go and get myself this genuine part replacement, http://www.rogerclarkmotorsport.co.u...productID=2431

Oh, fantastic, thanks pal!

I've been reading tonight actually that the MAF sensor can cause fault 22, it's curious that I had some trouble with the MAF sensor a while ago. Basically, there was no CEL but in diagnostic mode it was showing the fault code for a MAF sensor. I took it to a specialist but it seemed like the fault had completely cleared when I got there.. (typical).

I took it to my mapper who tested it and said it was working fine and that the issue was probably bad fuel. I will keep this post updated with my progress; I will probably just drive my back up car until this gets fixed :-)

Maybe get the MAF tested again before buying a new knock sensor,MAF's on classics are well known for being a bit weak....
