I have a 98 sti type r fitted with a power fc and was wondering wether the power fc uses the information from the sensor or is it just for reference?
Reason I ask is I'm running a fmic and induction kit and the sensor is just lying in the engine bay and have noticed on the commander quite high temps now.
If the power fc doesn't use it for calculating fueling etc can it be used for measuring intake temps at the throttle body?

I wish someone would answer this as I'm interested too.

I monitor the air temp with a Commander too but it's in the stock position.

I think monitoring intake temps at the throttle body using the oe sensor wouldn't be easy as the sensor's quite big.

 

There's a 2d table available on the PowerFC when using the Datalogit box for Intake Air Temp vs Ignition Retard. Can be used to subtract timing for hot intake air temp.

This table can't be seen or modified on the commander.

 

Is the existing intake temp sensor located in the maf? As the sensor I'm thinking of using used to be fitted on the ducting that went to the snorkel then the old air filter housing. I thought this may have been an ambient temp sensor?

 

I was thinking of mounting it in the silicone hose at the throttle body

 

In my V3 STi the air temp sensor is the one in the air intake snorkel. It's certainly not an ambient temp reading.

The problem you'd have fitting it into the silicone hose would be sealing it adequately. Also is there enough cable to get it where you want it to be?

 

I'd extend the wiring for it. So I really need to know wether the power fc uses it to calculate or wether its just for reference on the commander screen as if it's used for adjusting fueling etc it's not good that it just sitting in the engine bay and not in the intake air flow

 

Sorry missed this, so it is used whilst mapping but onced mapped the power fc doesn't use it for live adjustments or have I got it all wrong?

 

No, the ignition vs temp correction is always used by the ecu, if setup. - it just can't be accessed or modified via the hand controller

 

So is it ok to move that sensor to just before the throttle body then?

I'm not sure you're going to get a precise answer here. If I were you I'd phone one of the known Scooby tuners and ask them.

I'd call Mark at Thwaites Developments and ask if the sensor is used by the ecu to alter any settings.

If you do get an answer I'd be interested in finding out.

 

The stock plastic air temp sensor is not ideal to use for charge temp measurement or ignition correction.

It will be difficult to mount and seal in a boost pipe, and has a slow response to temp changes.

It's scaling is not configurable on the ecu, so can't simply be substituted with a faster acting sensor either

 

So will it be ok to mount into the rubber pipe after the maf as it was originally pre turbo as standard?
