Default overheated

ok top hose went bang , i mean serious bang split about 3 inch up the side, whilst i was on a a2

so i get to wher i need to go let car cool down, now itake the risk of letting it cool down and then driving it back home down the a2,

i thought constant speed low revs would keep it cool , well this seemed to work until i got 2 mins away from home then then car did not want to stay running ,

but i pushed her anyway limped her home.

Got the bonnet open and a couple of buckets of hot water and started to manually circualte the water around the engine .

Now its all cooled down what damage am i likely to have caused, it literally just had new acl bearings mains and bigs and new piston rings and new headgasket am i likely to have fried the lot!

the oil was effing hot so im gonna change all of that , and the oil was so hot it started steaming and now stinks rotton

ive killed it havent i

Doesn't sound good at all. I wouldn't have driven it any further after the hose broke

Good excuse for having "get you home" cover?

anyway, I reckon it'll be done for, yes. You'll need to get it stripped to see what damage is done.

IF you are lucky, you might save the crank, rods and block, but don't count on it.
The cams and cam-bearings may also be shot

I think the very best you can expect from this is warped head gaskets! But they're bound to be shot to bits, as they're the likely cause of the overheating in the first place.

But you're likely to have warped a head/s too.... Maybe something far worse?!

Just a bit of background info, have only just rebuilt this engine 60miles ago, with brand new acl bearings, brand new multilayer steel headgaskets, heads had just been skimmed new piston rings ,

I only drove for 10 miles

Im gonna strip it all back out and see what ive got away with but i might be lucky, who knows.

now i doubt the head gasket would have failed that early on so not sure what caused the pipe to blow, can also see the rad cap was working as the overflow bottle was full up and could see it had popped the cap of and also let water out.

You did an expensive rebuild and didn't think to replace radiator hoses?
Wow

Not usually, but TBH, what DOES wear them quicker than anything is manipulating them: squeezing, bending, pulling on and off......

Those and drive belts are a norm for replacement. For the outlay, you save a lot of heartache.

ok lil update got home and thought i would run some tests.
ok she runs ! fine, straight up straight away no knocks no smoke no nothing,

gave a lil rev ad everything sounded fine,

so maybe i may have got away with it ,

is there any easy way to check the rod bearings from the sump has anyone attempted this? i know when i rebuilt the engine it seemed pretty tight. to go through the sump.

You may well have gotten away with it.

My old 93 WRX suffered a HG failure and a few times it overheated (on boost) - temps into the 120+ deg.C were noted!

When I had the subsequent rebuild done, everything (other than the culprit WRX spec fibre HG) was perfect! - Paul at Zen showed me the internals, etc.
