Question

I have a UK MY99. Under reasonably hard acceleration, their is a thud from what appears to the the rear of the car. Is this usual ? It it something to worry about ? Is it just the rear wheels, propshaft thing taking grip ? Cheers, MKC...

Have a uk MY99 myself and have been in two other Uk Imprezas and have never came across such symptons. Me thinks you should have it looked at.

Does it happen as you change gear? If so, then it sounds like the drive shaft(?). Unless there's a fault, I'd look at changing gear a bit smoother.

Dont know know if it is the same on scoobys but on my old celica the symptoms you describe were of a worn rear diff cusion.... it is basically a rubber bush that takes the strain from the diff moving back and forth when accelerating and braking...

But dont know if scoobys have one could be worth having a look near the diff to see if any bushes look to be worn..

Its after a rapid gear change (which most are).

Thanks,

MKC

(PS:There is nothing in the boot,
or loose in it that I can find...).

I would have a look for any worn bushes / links etc to see if anythings amiss.
Have you done a lot of miles?

Nearly 61k. Full Dealer History and warrenty so I can point it out to them. However, having an idea of what it might be is always a good thing, before they tell me its the wiper blades or radio aerial causing it !!!

Every Impreza I've been in has made a bit of a thump when changing gear fast, so I don't think there's anything wrong. Unless it's so loud it rattles your teeth.

I think it's just the Diff engaging?!?!

Yep, I would class it as just a "bit of a thump".

Hardly noticeable, but my misses is paranoid and thinks (quite rightly) that I am going to destroy the rest of the car (as I did with its engine last month...). She's brought it to my attention, so I thought I ought to check...

Many thanks,

MKC.

Back box hitting the Rear subframe???? Had a bit of trouble with that when first fitted the back box! Check the gap between the pipe and the sub frame.

what they do have tho is an arm that goes from 1 side of the car to the other that the diff is bolted to look just in front of the rear wheels under the car tho not in the wheel arch and there are some bushes in each end that can go and cause a knock. but you realy have to check them from under neath.
