Failing Speedo

Hi,
Need some help re: above. Car is STI V Type R (99). Speedo indication intermittantly keeps falling off/ not registering. Is this mechanical or electronic type. There are three different connections/wire in to gearbox. Is it something I can cure myself? MOT due soon! THX in adv.

I recall sum ppl having same trubble with speedo cured by cleaning fuses or sumin as i recall hopefully sum1 else nos a bit more.
If however it's bust & u need a replacement i have a list having buggered my rev dial up numerous times
