Default STI - Tapping sound

Hi , first post

Got a 2005 Sti . Standard

I have noticed when its fully hot and has been given some beans i can hear a sound which basically sound like a ton of stones in a tin can being shaken about . ( The sound is random and not in a pattern )

After turning the engine off it continues to do this untill cool.

Im assuming its some sort of heatshield or pipe ? Has any one else had this when hot and when turned off ?

WHen cold its fine ( or warm ) , and car also runs perfect

Many thanks
Luke

I could understand it making the noise when turned off , but should it be making it when the engine is hot and still running ?

Thanks btw

Exhausts and heatsheilds normally tick. They tick fast when hot, then the ticking gets slower as the part cools down. The ton of stones in a can being shaken about doesnt ring any bells to me.

How about trying to video/sound record it? We'd be able to instantly tell you if it's normal if you did that...

i agree till i read the o/p still has the same sound once the engine is off. So theres no way it can be mechanical noise

That was one of my possibles too, but i couldnt attach the stones and tin to a fan spinning.

Spin both fans by hand see if they spin freely, especially the secondary fan.

Its not interfering with the performance of your car and you know what the noise is now ,so just live with it imho,as the other 90% of scooby owners do.If you were going to fit some ported headers then it would be worth having them heatwrapped while they are on the bench ,but otherwise just leave them.
