Default Idealing issue

Hi my mate has a UK 300 STI bugeye (2001) Every now and then you get a strong smell of fuel while driving and the next time you come to a stop the Scooby wont idle. Car drives and runs fine most of the time.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Try cleaning the idle control valve.

Would be good if we knew of any and all mods too, to allow us to make an informed decision rather than a guess.

Oh, and it's an IDLE control valve, so the word is idling.

Perhaps the fuel smell is from a split pipe,is it still running a charcoal canister?

The car is totaly standard with no upgrades at all. Yes it will still be running the charcoal canister. Are these a common fault?

Not a common fault but I'd check all the pipes to it. The vent to the canister is switched on & off by a solenoid. A split pipe or canister could in effect switch an air leak on & off & cause a fuel smell.

Thought all bugs suffered from fuel lines leak. Most being repaired by subaru for nowt. Don't explain poor idle though !

Idle control valve or faulty Maf....

Can you do the diagnostics mode self test to see if it displays an error code?

Cannister is usually behind the OSF headlamp. Trace the pipes back from it. Not a common fault but could be a free fix if it is the problem.
