Smoke/steam from turbo
Hey guys. Have just finished changing the standard td04 for a VF35 on my MY00 uk classic. Started the car and all is beautiful, no leaks, but there's a verrryyy ligghhtt waft of smoke/steam coming from under the turbo heatshield sorta thing. Can't really pinpoint exactly where, but it seems to be the turbo somewhere. Could it be the join where the up-pipe joins onto the turbo? Would a slight leak of air there cause smoke/steam? Can't hear anything blowing tho, sounds perfectly normal. I only had it running for about 1-2 mins so I thought it might just be because the turbo has been sat for 2 months or more and also the car has been sat for a week now too. It may well just clear and be fine after a few mins but I wanted to check on here first.
I would post a video clip, but the steam/smoke is too slight for even the camera to pick up. Any ideas as to what it could be and if it is a problem tho, would be great thanks

Wow that's so obvious, why didn't I think of that! I think that's probably a good shout. I just had the car running for a bit longer and it does seem to be getting less rather than worse

Next question now.....there is a general smell of very hot metal. Like when I was just stopped at traffic lights I noticed it. I'm guessing it's because the turbo is new on the car. But the weirdest thing.....my cooling fans are on MUCH more than they were before the turbo change. What's that about?! Oil and water temp are perfectly normal

Hi guys, it was suggested to me that the fans coming on more often than usual meant I had low coolant levels, probably from when I lost coolant whilst changing the turbos. I did top up again afterwards but obviously not enough. I have topped up even more now and this has stopped the fans coming on all the time and they are back to normal
