(Don't think the WRX TMIC is plastic - just black coloured metal. Although it does have a hard plastic Y-pipe though, compared to the STi's metal/silicone Y-pipe. It is also shallower than the STi silver one.)
Think the V.3/4 STi engine code begins "EJ20K..." (rather than EG20G).
Code should be stamped on The VIN plate riveted to the passenger suspension turret.
Also, if still present, there should be a white (or silver) sticker on the black plastic cam cover with the full engine code written in black text.

would you be able to tell by the type of "sparkies" that are fitted?
or are they a standard replacement part for all classics?

My advice is to do some research on impreza's it's an absolute minefield out there, and if you don't know what your looking at you can get fleeced incredibly easily.
There are loads of numpties advertising their turbo 2000's and base wrx's as sti models when they are clearly not.
Type r models are a little notorious for killing there engines as a lot of uneducated folk buy them and thrash them on Asda fuel when they were designed to use high octane fuel.
It's upto you but spend a few days looking at buying guides etc it could be invaluable info.

The WRX type R is worth less than the STi type R, and it is not unusual for sellers to confuse the two in their favour. (It isn't a new thing either: I went to look at an advertised 1998 STi type R back in 2005, it turned out to be a WRX type R)

as quoted earlier mate you really need to do a bit of research into what you are looking for first, in my honest opinion a type R which has clearly been painted a different colour i would stay the hell away from it!!
