Default transmission leak

any advice on the following would be great

i have a 2002 sti uk which i bought in july last year and it has leaked transmission oil all of that time its done 6000 miles in that time and has taken over 3 litres of oil to keep the level up it has been looked at by the scoobyclinic and they were not able to pinpoint where the leak is coming from and they suggested a transmission swap for £750+vat which is reasonable but am reluctant to spend on another box as the one in the car feels fine when warmed up

i suspect the transmission had work done on it by a previous owner as some of the lugs where the driveshafts enter the casing have been broken

has anyone had similar from a 6 speed newage gearbox or could suggest anything

i also get smoke and fumes from engine bay so does the gearbox itself get hot enough to burn off trannie oil

ps the leak seems to come from the front of the gearbox

thanks for reading
