If you ask 10 different people you'll probably get 10 different answers, but mine only gets Mobil 1 10 60 recommended by my engine builder.

Think the OEM recommendation is 5W-30 for your model. Or 5W-40 as an alternative/if you hoon reqularly.

But check out Opie's online oil recommendation wizard...

Remind me not to use them for oil (its really bad advice they gave you tbh) you would be better off with a 10w50, lower shear value or a 15w50, a 10w60 isnt good, even at that level, and I would suspect that you have not had a front mounted oil cooler fitted?

Tony,I do have a front mount oil cooler. I did use Mobil 10/50 but Mobil have now discontinued it & it is superseded by 10/60 extended life don't know the significance of this but I am told this is the right spec for my car from the mobil range.

It's a can of worms - stick with what Subaru recommend for a standard or near standard motor

Hi

I'd go for a 5w-40 synthetic. The standard recommendation for those is 5w-30, but 5w-40 will give better protection if you like to put your foot down.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Cheers

Not ideal. Because of the large viscosity gap the oil is quite easily broken down into a thinner grade, like a 5w-40 or 10w-40. If you need a 40, it's better to go for a good 5w-40 or 10w-40 that will be more stable. If you need a 50, a 10w-50 is a better option.

We don't see why Mobil would do that, the only reasons I can think of is that because they want to go and get Ferrari, M-Series or Aston approval for the oil, so it needs to be a 10w-60, or because they have seen the number of people that have been incorrectly told to use a 10w-60. They have lost out on a lot of sales since they stopped making the 15w-50. You can actually use the Mobil 15w-50 Racing (bike oil) as it's the same stuff as the old 15w-50 for cars.

Personally, I'd stop using Mobil and go for something that's suitable for your car. There are plenty of 15w-50s around and some of them, like the Fuchs Pro R, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition are better oils than the Mobil anyway.

If it's mainly getting used on the road, I'd go for the 10w-50 so it gets the best cold start protection. If mainly on track, 15w-50 as the oil will be a little more stable.

Out of those, the ones to go for are the Fuchs Pro S & R, Millers CFS, Redline, Motul 300V or Gulf Competition.

I thought bike oil was different to car oil because bikes use a wet clutch. Because of this bike oil does not have some of the additives that car oil has (polymers?) due to it making the clutch slip. Because of this bike oil will not offer the same amount of protection in anti wear?

Technically, yes they are different and it's due to the level of friction modifiers to stop the wet clutches from slipping. In reality, they are often the same thing. Many companies will produce than oil and call it so and so for cars, then call it something different, but for bikes (and usually charge more). The Mobil 1 15w-50 Motorsport oil was one of those oils and was fine for use in cars and bikes.

I'm currently running 10w50 Pro-S in my forged 2.5 at 440BHP, mostly fast road and will do a couple of track days a year, normally (but not this year ) a trip to and around the ring. Looking about it seems that the Pro-R 15W-50 might be better car isn't used that much in winter, front mount oil cooler fitted, max oil temp so far a shade over 100, motorways 75 to 80 (prosport gauge) on track 90-100.

Any ideas - I want the best protection possible, car is warmed up at idle for 5 mins before driving off and never on boost until oil is 75-80.

Your oil temperatures look ok IMHO

Hi

No point in changing to a 10w-50, a good 5w-40 will be fine all year round.

Unless it's using lots of oil, I'd stick with the 10w-50. If it is using lots, try the 15w-50.

I've gone to buy some more Mobile 1 15/50 and found it's no longer available, my car runs 470bhp no track days but the oil does get hot driving down country lanes.

Which is the best Motul 15/50 oil? 300V racing oil? I hope my engine doesn't mind the change of oil after seven years running Mobile 1.

Hi Anders

Your engine should be fine with the change of oil, 300V, Redline, Fuchs Pro R and Gulf Competition are all a step in quality above the Mobil.
